Invisalign or by Post?
What's included and what's missing when aligners are posted to you rather than provided by a dentist, and the questions to ask before paying for either.
Are Mail-Order Aligners Safe for Straightening Teeth?
They can manage minor corrections, but you give up the safeguards. Invisalign from a dental practice begins with a face-to-face examination and X-rays, grips the teeth using bonded attachments, and is reviewed in person every six to eight weeks; most mail-order aligners are planned remotely from photos or a home impression. At Lanark Smile Studios, Invisalign starts from £3,250 after a free consultation, with refinements, Vivera retainers and whitening included.
Where the Two Differ
Both use clear trays to push teeth into new positions, and the bone reacts identically. The real difference is everything surrounding the trays: what happens before they're made, while you wear them and once you finish.
| Feature | Invisalign with us | Most mail-order aligners |
|---|---|---|
| Face-to-face examination by a dentist | Yes, before any planning | Seldom |
| X-rays of roots and bone | Yes | Generally not |
| Recording your teeth | iTero scan at the practice | Home putty kit, or a scan in a shop |
| Attachments to improve grip | Placed where required | Usually not an option |
| Monitoring progress | In person every 6 to 8 weeks | Photos or an app, if anything |
| Retainers | Vivera, included | Varies by company |
What an Examination Picks Up
Straightening teeth is clinical treatment, and what lies beneath the gum counts as much as what you see in the mirror. With gum disease, moving teeth through inflamed bone can hasten bone loss. A small cavity sealed under a tray for a year can progress to needing root canal treatment. Short roots, a failing old crown or a bite that already overloads some teeth all affect what can safely be done.
A selfie or putty impression reveals none of this. At a free consultation at our Lanark practice, Dr Kalsi or Dr Gray examines your teeth and gums and reviews X-rays before any plan is made, and anything needing treatment first is raised at that appointment.

Recording, Planning and Grip
Each tray must fit your teeth precisely, so the initial record is crucial. Our iTero scanner captures your teeth and gums in 3D within minutes, without putty, and the plan is built from that. A home impression kit depends on you taking an accurate mould of your own teeth in the bathroom, and small inaccuracies lead to trays that don't sit properly.
Grip matters as well. Many movements, such as rotating a tooth or raising one into line, require small tooth-coloured attachments bonded to the enamel. Sometimes a thin sliver is polished between teeth to make space. Both need a dentist present, so remote treatment tends to be confined to simpler tipping movements, which is a big reason some mail-order cases stall before they finish.
Reviews During Treatment
With us, you'll be seen about every six to eight weeks. We check that each tooth is keeping pace, that attachments are intact and that your gums are healthy, then give you your next trays. A tooth falling behind is caught at the following visit rather than at the end. Should you need extra aligners to complete the result, those refinements are already part of your package.
An app photo can show a certain amount. It can't confirm a tray is fully seated, show how your back teeth now meet, or pick up a gum beginning to recede.
If Something Goes Wrong
When a tray cracks, a tooth won't budge or your bite suddenly feels off, you want a person you can see face to face. Through a practice, responsibility sits with the dentist who drew up your plan, from the first tray to the last, and they can change direction if needed.
With a mail-order provider, support rests wholly on the company. One of the largest firms in that market closed in 2023, leaving customers mid-treatment with no more trays and no retainers. Each set of trays follows a single company's plan, which nobody else can take over, so most of those customers had to be reassessed and start again.
What It Really Costs
Invisalign with us costs from £3,250 (Lite) to £4,750 (Comprehensive Plus), with the package determined by how much movement your plan needs. 1 This covers the examination, scans and X-rays, every aligner, refinements, Vivera retainers, home whitening and a hygiene visit, confirmed in writing. Our Invisalign cost guide lists all four packages.
Mail-order prices often appear lower. To compare fairly, add back what might be absent: an examination and X-rays, extra trays if the first set doesn't finish the job, retainers, and treatment for any problem discovered late.
Partway Through Already?
If you began with a remote provider and you're concerned, uncomfortable, or your teeth seem to have stopped moving, book a free consultation and bring any paperwork or screenshots from the app. Dr Kalsi or Dr Gray will check your teeth and gums, scan them and explain clearly where things stand. We can't carry on another company's trays, so any next step involves a new plan. If much of the movement is already done, that plan may be shorter than you think.
Please don't just abandon the trays and hope. Half-finished movement may leave the bite uneven, and teeth with no retainer will wander. Should you decide to stop there, you'll come away knowing how healthy your teeth and gums are. Our guide to adult Invisalign explains what treatment with us involves.
Questions
This guide is general information, not a diagnosis. A dentist needs to examine you to say what is right for your teeth.
