Which Appliance Do You Need?
They may look similar, but each does a different job. Once we've examined your teeth, bite and jaw, we'll suggest the right one.
Sports Mouthguard
Built around your own teeth for contact sport, from rugby, hockey and football to boxing, judo and other martial arts. A close fit means you can speak and breathe normally, so it gets used at training as well as on match day (£190).
Night Guard
A slim, transparent guard for sleeping in. It absorbs the load from clenching and grinding, shielding your teeth along with any crowns, veneers or bonding (£210).
Hard Occlusal Splint
Made from rigid acrylic and adjusted across several appointments until your teeth contact it evenly. Suited to heavy grinding, obvious wear or jaw pain (from £620).
Anti-Snoring Device
A pair of connected trays that keeps your lower jaw slightly forward overnight, helping hold the airway open in straightforward snoring (from £620).
Retainers
Clear Essix retainers keep straightened teeth from moving back (£214 per arch). Every Invisalign treatment includes Vivera retainers.
Protecting Dental Work
Grinding makes bonding, veneers, crowns and implant teeth chip and wear sooner. Wearing a guard at night is an inexpensive way to protect them.
Grinding in Your Sleep?
Grinding mostly happens while you're asleep, so few people realise. Look for these signs instead.
How It's Made
Examination
Your dentist looks for wear, cracks and tension in the jaw muscles and joints, and checks whether anything should be sorted first, like a broken filling or a high spot on a tooth.
3D Scan
Our iTero scanner captures your upper and lower teeth in minutes, and the lab builds the appliance from that digital file.
Fit and Adjust
Once it's back from the lab, we put it in, make sure it's stable and doesn't press anywhere, and refine it until your bite meets it evenly.
Review
After you've worn it for a few weeks, a brief appointment confirms it's comfortable and working as it should.
Shop-Bought or Made to Fit?
A boil-and-bite guard from a pharmacy will do for a short while. Being bulky and loose, though, it usually gets abandoned after a few weeks, and a guard left in a drawer protects nothing. One made for you is thinner, holds on to the teeth firmly and is adjusted to how you bite.
It's worth being clear: a night guard protects your teeth but doesn't cure the grinding. If stress, disturbed sleep or a jaw joint issue is driving it, we'll tell you and suggest where to get help. With jaw pain or heavy wear, the usual next step is a hard splint refined over a few appointments. Our jaw pain page explains more.
Anti-snoring devices are meant for simple snoring. Pauses in breathing at night, waking with a gasp or falling asleep in the daytime can point to sleep apnoea. Speak to your GP first; a dental appliance might then be part of the care they organise.
