Root Canal Treatment in Lanark: Stop the Ache, Keep Your Tooth
In Lanark, root canal treatment costs between £450 (front tooth) and £595 (molar), normally over one or two appointments. 1 We take out the infected nerve, clean and disinfect the canals inside the root, then seal them, saving a tooth that would otherwise need extracting.
On a dental plan the fee is £405 to £536. 1 We provide root canal treatment on the NHS as well. We're taking on new NHS patients, adults and children, as well as private patients.
The Treatment Itself
With local anaesthetic, it's not unlike having a longer filling.
Assessing the Tooth
Tests and an X-ray tell us whether the tooth is worth saving. Before anything begins, you'll know the cost and have the choice of an extraction instead.
Cleaning the Canals
Once you're numb, we make a small access hole in the biting surface, remove the nerve tissue, and shape and flush every canal with disinfectant.
Medicating, If Needed
Where infection is severe, we place a medicated dressing under a temporary filling for one to two weeks. The pain tends to ease quickly after this stage.
Sealing and Restoring
We fill each canal to its end and seal the tooth. Front teeth are often finished with a filling, while back teeth need an onlay or crown to protect them.
Tell-Tale Signs
An infected tooth can be completely silent, picked up only on an X-ray.
If swelling is spreading to your eye or neck, or you struggle to swallow or breathe, go to A&E or call 999 immediately. When we're closed, phone NHS 24 on 111.
Keep It or Extract It?
Extraction costs less and is faster at the time. But the space it leaves causes problems: neighbouring teeth tilt in, the tooth that bites against it can move into the space, and replacing it later with an implant or bridge costs more than saving it would have.
If the tooth is saveable and you'd like to keep it, we'll generally recommend treatment. If not, perhaps because the root is split or not enough tooth remains to restore, we'll tell you honestly instead of treating a tooth unlikely to last.
Does It Last?
Provided the tooth is well sealed and properly restored, most root-filled teeth settle and keep working for many years, frequently for life. Later failures usually happen when a crack or leaking filling lets bacteria back in, which is why we cover back teeth.
If an old root filling flares up, it can often be retreated, from £595. For curved canals, or where an extra canal is suspected, we may suggest a CT scan on our in-house scanner to see the roots in 3D.
An infected tooth can't be cured with antibiotics. They help when infection is spreading, but the cause inside the tooth still needs treating.

Fees vary by tooth: an incisor usually has a single canal, a molar three or four. Your written plan confirms the price, and dental plan members save 10%. 1

Your Dentist
Our dentists, Dr Ioannis Flessas and Dr Batuhan Akça, provide root canal treatment here. Digital X-rays during the procedure confirm every canal is cleaned right to its end.
Some teeth are especially complicated, for example with canals that are blocked or an instrument left from previous treatment, and may be better treated by a dentist whose practice is limited to root canals. If yours is one of them, we'll explain and organise a referral.
