Sedation Dentistry: IV Sedation in Lanark
At Lanark Smile Studios, a session of IV sedation is £500. The medicine goes into a vein and leaves you profoundly relaxed but still conscious and able to respond when spoken to, and most people remember little of it later. It's available for implant surgery, long appointments, and anyone whose fear has kept them from dental care.
The first session is £500, and every extra half hour adds £250. You'll see the sedation charge in your treatment plan before saying yes.
Who It Helps
Sedation never replaces the numbing injection. One settles your nerves, and the local anaesthetic blocks pain.
When We Wouldn't Advise It
These are discussed with you long before an appointment is set.
How It Works
You are not put to sleep: this is conscious sedation rather than a general anaesthetic. A sedation-trained clinician places a fine cannula in your hand or arm, and trained staff monitor you continuously while the dentist treats you.
Assessment
We go through your health and any medicines, measure your blood pressure and ask which parts of dental care you find hardest, normally at the consultation.
Preparing
Eat a light snack beforehand. You'll need an adult who brings you, waits close by and takes you home.
During Treatment
Your heart rate, breathing and oxygen level are monitored throughout, and you can still hear the dentist and reply.
Afterwards
Rest at home. Until 24 hours have passed, don't drive, drink, operate machinery or sign anything that matters.
The Feeling
Patients often describe a warm, heavy, drowsy feeling. Time seems to shrink, so an hour can pass like ten minutes, and recollection of the visit is usually hazy or missing.
You can still follow simple requests, such as opening a little wider or turning your head. Local anaesthetic numbs the area being worked on as it would at any visit, so you shouldn't feel pain.
Is it safe? Sedation of this kind is used routinely across UK dentistry. Your vital signs are tracked the whole time, and the practice keeps emergency drugs and equipment, as all dental practices must.
If you're having implants here, whether one implant or a whole arch, sedation can be added for the surgical appointments.

Implant surgery for a whole jaw, in a long session that feels far shorter.
Individual Implants
Placing implants or grafting bone, if you'd rather not be fully aware of it.
Implant Dentures
Fitting the two or four implants your new denture will clip onto.
Wisdom Tooth Removal
Surgical extraction, often the treatment people dread most.
Clearing a Backlog
Multiple fillings or crowns grouped into one or two longer sessions.
After Years Away
Fillings, crowns or root canal work that fear has made you postpone.
