Why Retainers Matter
The reasons teeth drift after straightening, the routine we recommend, simple ways to make a retainer go further, and what to do if one breaks or disappears.
Do I Need a Retainer After Invisalign?
Yes, and for most people that means wearing it at night indefinitely. Straightened teeth tend to move back, and all teeth keep shifting gradually through adult life, so the usual pattern is full-time wear for a short period followed by every night from then on. At Lanark Smile Studios, each Invisalign package comes with Vivera retainers, and replacing the set costs £530.
In a Nutshell
Aligners do the moving; retainers do the holding. Leave the retainers out and much of the result can gradually unravel over months and years, most often beginning with the lower front teeth. Every Invisalign patient at Lanark Smile Studios finishes with Vivera retainers, and you'll be given a wearing plan on the day your final aligner comes out.
What Pulls Teeth Back
A tooth is suspended in its socket by a network of tiny fibres, with a further band of fibres circling its neck just beneath the gum. Moving the tooth stretches them, and for months they act like elastic bands, drawing it back towards where it began. The band around the neck takes longest to adapt, which explains why a rotated tooth is the likeliest to rotate again.
A slower influence works alongside this. Teeth move gradually throughout adulthood, treated or not, and lower front teeth tend to crowd with age. Retainers therefore aren't just for the first year. They are what prevents normal ageing from reversing your treatment.
Have Your Teeth Shifted Since Braces?
A free consultation and scan with Dr Kalsi or Dr Gray will show how far they've moved.
How Often to Wear Them
| Stage | Wear | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Immediately after treatment | Day and night, removed only to eat and brush | Fibres are newly stretched and pulling hardest |
| Next | Each night while you sleep | Keeps things steady while bone and gum mature |
| Long term | Every night, with no end date | Offsets the drift that comes with age |
The length of the full-time stage depends on how far and in which direction your teeth moved, so we set it for you rather than quoting one standard figure. Once you're wearing them only at night, missing an occasional night is fine. Two weeks without them may not be.
Here's a handy sign: a retainer that feels tight going in means your teeth have begun to stray and it is guiding them back. Take that as a cue to wear it more, not less.
Vivera, Essix or a Bonded Wire?
Vivera retainers come from the makers of Invisalign and are produced from a scan of your finished teeth. They resemble a clear aligner, but the material is thicker and stronger, since it must survive for years rather than a week or two. These are the retainers included with your treatment.
Essix retainers are also clear and removable, made from another type of plastic. They're a practical, lower-cost replacement if you lose one arch: £214 for a single arch or £270 for top and bottom. 1
A bonded wire is fixed behind the front teeth. Its attraction is that you can't forget it, but it slows flossing and can work loose without you realising. Most people coming out of aligners find a removable retainer easier, and some choose both.
Caring for Your Retainer
- Brush before the retainer goes in at night, so plaque isn't trapped against your teeth until morning
- Each morning, rinse it and clean it gently with a soft brush in cool water
- Skip the toothpaste; it's abrasive enough to scratch and cloud the plastic
- Keep it away from hot water, sunny windowsills and car dashboards, because heat bends it out of shape
- Put it in its case every single time. Retainers left in a tissue usually get thrown away
- Store it where dogs can't reach, as they find retainers irresistible
- Bring it to your dental examinations so we can test the fit and look for cracks
Looked after this way, a set lasts well. Eventually the plastic dulls, wears thin or splits, and we'll let you know when a replacement is due.
Lost, Broken or Too Tight
Contact us within the week. Teeth can begin shifting in a matter of days, and the faster a new retainer is made, the less needs correcting. Wear your last aligner at night meanwhile if you still have it. Replacements are made from a new iTero scan, so no putty is needed.
If you've slipped out of the habit and the retainer now goes in only with some pressure, steady wear may coax the teeth back. If it won't seat at all, don't push it, as you could crack it or strain the teeth. The answer then is usually a short course of aligners. Invisalign Lite, at £3,250, is designed for that kind of relapse and includes a fresh set of Vivera retainers.
A Retainer Isn't Protection
Retainers hold teeth in place. They do nothing to prevent decay or gum disease, so straight teeth still need cleaning in between, routine dental examinations and regular hygiene visits. Tell us if you clench or grind at night. A thin retainer isn't designed for those forces, and a night guard may be a better thing to sleep in, alongside a plan to keep your teeth aligned.
If your bite feels different, or a retainer that used to click in easily is now tight or loose, book an appointment rather than waiting for your next dental examination. A small movement spotted early is much simpler to correct.
Everything Your Package Covers
Retainers are just one part. Each Invisalign package here includes the scan, simulation and X-rays, all aligners, refinements, Vivera retainers, home whitening and a hygiene visit. Fees range from £3,250 to £4,750, and our Invisalign cost guide shows which package suits which kind of case. 1
Whitening is deliberately left until the end. Straight teeth are the right moment to brighten the shade, and whitening before any bonding or veneers lets everything be matched to the lighter colour.
