Aligners or Braces?
A fair side-by-side look at two ways to straighten teeth: how each fits into daily life, what each handles better, and how to decide which is right for you.
Is Invisalign or Fixed Braces Better for Adults?
For common adult concerns such as crowding, spacing, a rotated tooth or a mild bite problem, Invisalign achieves much the same result as fixed braces and is far easier to live with, because the aligners come out. Fixed braces remain the stronger choice for major jaw-related bite problems, and for anyone unlikely to keep aligners in for 20 to 22 hours a day. At Lanark Smile Studios, a free consultation and iTero scan with Dr Kalsi or Dr Gray shows which suits your teeth, and if braces would serve you better we'll say so.
How Both of Them Move Teeth
Underneath, every straightening method relies on the same process. Light, constant pressure on a tooth causes bone to be removed on one side and laid down on the other, so the tooth moves a fraction of a millimetre at a time. The real difference is the way that pressure is applied.
Fixed braces use small brackets bonded to each tooth and joined by a wire. At each visit the wire is adjusted or changed and the teeth follow its shape. Since they can't be removed, they work day and night without any input from you.
Invisalign uses a sequence of clear plastic trays, each slightly different from the one before, changed every week or two. Small tooth-coloured attachments on some teeth give the plastic something to push against. The full series is planned digitally from an iTero scan, so you can see the intended result before you start.
Day-to-Day Differences
| Feature | Invisalign | Fixed braces |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Clear and discreet | Visible brackets and wire |
| Eating | Remove trays and eat as normal | Steer clear of hard, sticky and chewy food |
| Cleaning | Your usual routine | Takes longer, with extra brushes |
| Comfort | Smooth plastic | Brackets may rub cheeks and lips |
| Repairs | Uncommon | Brackets come loose, wires can poke |
| What makes it work | Your wear time | The fixed appliance, constantly |
| Major jaw problems | Limited | Generally the stronger choice |
For a straightforward adult case, the end result can be very similar. The decision usually comes down to which of these differences weighs most with you.
Unsure Which Option Suits You?
Let a free scan and simulation show you what aligners might do.
The Case for Invisalign
- Discretion. Clear trays seldom show at work, in meetings or in photographs.
- Food. No list of forbidden foods, since the trays come out for meals. Just brush before putting them back.
- Hygiene. You keep your usual routine, which is valuable if you have crowns, fillings or gums that need attention.
- Fewer urgent repairs. Nothing to snap or come unglued.
- See it first. The simulation shows the intended outcome before you commit any money.
- Relapse cases. Teeth that have moved since braces in your teens are often a short Lite treatment.
The Case for Fixed Braces
If the underlying issue is the position of the jaws rather than the teeth, fixed braces are usually where treatment begins, sometimes together with jaw surgery. Braces also handle certain movements more reliably: rotating a severely turned canine, drawing a tooth down into the arch or pushing one up into the bone, and closing a wide gap after an extraction.
Habits count too. Aligners work only while you wear them. If you suspect yours would end up on the bedside table, braces are the more realistic option, as they need no willpower.
At Lanark Smile Studios we consider fixed braces as well as aligners. Where braces would give a better outcome, we'll explain why and recommend them. Beginning aligners on a case they can't complete well benefits no one.
Comfort and Routine
With aligners, the main thing you'll feel is pressure for a day or so whenever you move to a new tray. Most describe it as tightness rather than pain. Your speech may change slightly for the first few days.
Braces are often sore for the first few weeks while your cheeks and lips adjust, and again after each tightening. Food gets trapped around the wire, and interdental brushes become part of everyday life. Plaque left around brackets can leave white marks on the enamel once they come off, so cleaning must be meticulous.
Whichever you choose, keep your hygiene appointments. Airflow cleaning reaches gently around attachments and brackets where a toothbrush has trouble.
Timescales and Fees
Where a case suits both, treatment time is roughly the same. Small corrections take a few months; larger ones generally take a year to eighteen months. The difference is that braces keep going on days you'd rather forget, while aligners only stay on schedule if worn 20 to 22 hours a day.
At Lanark Smile Studios, Invisalign costs £3,250 at the Lite end and £4,750 for Comprehensive Plus. The fee includes scans, X-rays, all aligners, refinements, Vivera retainers, home whitening and a hygiene visit. 1 Which package fits which kind of case is covered in our Invisalign cost guide. Holding a braces quote alongside it? Ask whether retainers, adjustment appointments and repairs are part of that price.
Our group has held Invisalign Diamond Apex status in every year from 2022 to 2026. The tier is based on cases treated, marking the top 1% of providers in Europe by volume. It isn't a qualification, but it shows aligners are a large part of what we do.
Retainers Either Way
Teeth try to drift back after any straightening, so both routes finish with retainers: full time at first, then nightly for the long run. After braces this is often a removable retainer, a fine wire bonded behind the front teeth, or both. After Invisalign with us, Vivera retainers are included. Our retainers guide sets out the routine.
Because retainers are for life, consider which you'd find easier to stick with. A removable retainer is a nightly habit you must remember. A bonded wire needs no remembering, but it takes longer to floss around and can come loose unnoticed.
Making Your Decision
Start with your own mouth rather than general advice. Arrange a free consultation at our Lanark practice, have your teeth and gums examined and an iTero scan taken, and look at the simulation. That shows whether aligners can achieve a good result for you and which package is likely.
Then be realistic about your lifestyle. If you graze all day, travel a lot or tend to lose things, tell us. We'd sooner recommend braces than begin aligners that end up in a drawer. If you're coming from Carluke, Lesmahagow or Forth, the reviews every six to eight weeks are brief and easy to fit in.
Questions
This guide is general information, not a diagnosis. A dentist needs to examine you to say what is right for your teeth.
